Blog? What? Who? Me?

Do You Blog?

I don’t know about you, but for me, blogging is a brand new concept.

When I first tuned into blogging last month it was the book Blogwild! A Guide for Small Business Blogging written by Andy Wibbels that helped me see the potential benefits of blogging. His simple book gives step by step directions for setting up a blog. For me, that was exactly what I wanted to do. I am working on a book and I wanted the blog to begin a conversation with my readers before it is even written.

While I have been on the fast track to learning and having fun with social networking, I am having a terrible time convincing my baby boomer peers that blogging is as entertaining as it is. I have heard the most interesting criticisms and suspicious thinking imaginable. I have also heard from more than one person who is just intimidated and doesn’t know how to start.

I understand all of the views and as a newbie myself, I am learning as I go. I am discovering that very few people my age…I am 55, are blogging. Many of my contacts are sending me emails rather than adding a comment to the blog. When I follow up, most say they have never blogged and they can’t figure it out or they don’t know why they would.

It reminds me of my first trip to Subway. While standing in line, I overheard the other customers ordering their subs and I thought, “All I want is a sandwich!” I was self conscious telling the server that I didn’t know how it worked. My hunger won over my nerves and I feasted on a custom made sandwich after she explained my choices to me.

Blogging is just like that. It seems intimidating for some and unsafe for others. Most of the comments come from people who are uninformed and haven’t looked at blogs in detail. The blog you are reading is through http://wordpress.com. WordPress is just one of many reputable companies. At no cost to me, I get to design and write whatever I want. I love that. I love testing my ideas and writing in a public venue to test the response.

More importantly, I LOVE meeting the people and that is the reason that baby boomers need to re-evaluate blogging. You can find a blog about any topic imaginable. From asparagus http://www.whatgeekseat.com/wordpress/2008/05/20/pistachio-encrusted-lamb-chop-with-asparagus/ to pingpong http://www.pingpongcentral.com/blog/, from ferrets http://all-about-ferrets.blogspot.com/ to Ferraris http://ferrari.brainbloggers.com/, from golf http://www.thegolfblog.com/ to gardens http://www.blotanical.com/ you can find a blog about anything.

Once you leave a comment or two, you will begin a quasi pen pal relationship with someone who shares your passion or hobby. Sometimes it is hard to find the comment link. It is usually follows the article and reference links but can be at the top near the introduction.

When you make a comment, you make someone’s day! I love hearing what people say and I also get a kick about where in the world they are! Knowing someone surfed by and notice me is fun!

Before you get to post your comment, you may need to fill in your name and email and identify yourself. This is done for everyone’s security and I am grateful for this service provided by the blog providers.

You can also sign up to be notified by email or RSS (really simple syndication) when a new blog is published. There will be links on the page that will connect you to this service. You can also book mark your favorite blogs. Whatever you do, try to revisit your blogs for a couple of weeks and check the new entries and responses. See what you think.

Some blogs are very busy and it can be hard to find the comment link. Try it though, it is a wonderful way to meet new people and engage in some meaningful dialog. I remember having a pen pal in South America when I was a teenager. I loved it and remember to this day the excitement of getting that envelope with the foreign stamps.

This feels the same. I am having a lot of fun and it is free, I can do it at home or on the road. Next vacation you plan, check out blogs about your destination. You may decide that you want your own blog but believe me, you can have plenty fun just surfing them. Put your topic next to the word blog in the google window and off you go!

This blog is for us….the newbies!! It cracks me up that people think I am a techie! Tee hee! I would love your stories, your questions and your blog experiences, in other words,

JOIN THE BLOGVERSATION! :-)

Bloggingly yours,

Catherine

Here’s another baby step into blogging. My new life does not provide opportunity regularly yet, to get on line consistantly. Our generation and responsibilities have a little to co-ordinate yet, I think.

    Hi Kate,

LOL (That means laugh out loud) You are right about that. I heard that when Scrabulous came down, white collar productivity went up 30%!

Here is a new employment blog just for you:

    Hey Catherine – -

BRAVO for you!!! Great start for your blogging adventure.

For once in my life I can say that I am not a Newbie in something “Tech” related. I started my first blog back in 2006 and I kept it up for about a year.

I started my current blog in April and I agree that receiving comments to something I have expressed publicly – - from people all over the world, no less – - is extraordinarily exciting – - and rewarding.

If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask. I received your note and will get another book out to you ASAP.

    Much love and blessings,
    Susan

    Thank Susan!

I appreciate your comments and kudos for your blogging efforts.

Is there one thing that you wish you would have known back when you were a newbie?

Did you have a book or teacher that helped you become blogfident?

    Hi Catherine,

Just wanted to drop by this blog and say hi! I would have never guessed that you just started blogging – you’re on fire with all your different blogs!

When I started (a bit less than a year ago) I definitely felt intimidated; but now I’m up to 3 blogs, so I guess that means I got over it! :)

And thank you for all the insightful comments you’ve made on my blogs – it’s so much more fun when people join the conversation. (But you’re right – I still get a lot of email comments too.)

I’ll be seeing ya on the blogs!

    Catherine, I LOVE blogging!

I too got a late start – earlier this year, even though I had set one up in ‘06 just to read someone else’s. I’d heard about blogging, listened to a tele-class on it, and thought it was a good idea – but it seemed so overwhelming.

    (Fast-forward to now…)

Not any more! I started with blogspot which is very user-friendly.

Even though I, too am 50-sumpthin’, I have a number of friends that age who also blog, so they’re out there, believe it!

And just to show how really enthusiastic I am, I started a few more blogs – which is a great way to stay focused on a topic!

Feel free to drop by and make comments!

    Hi Sheryl,

Thanks for your comments!! I am so glad to meet a blogging soul sister!!

It has been very interesting to see who blogs, who doesn’t and why. I am collecting lots of opinions and will be adding commentary here.

I can’t tell you how many times a blog comment makes my day!! When someone, somewhere gets a chuckle out of my take on life….my sense of who I am in this world is enhanced.

It also is a deeply felt assurance that the tough times in life DO have purpose and that life IS brighter and happier after a storm of hard circumstances.

    Bloggingly yours!
    Catherine

  • Catherine Behan // August 9, 2008 at 5:09 pm

    Hi Patricia,

Bless your heart, you have no idea how you are impacting my life!

So many of my efforts on the internet are started with, “Well, I don’t know what I am doing, but I think I will try…..”

With the various blog formats, it is pretty easy to put up your own blog…thank goodness for that!

I am glad to be developing a venue for people to get more blogfident! When I think how you have helped me believe in my dreams when

    you don’t know me

you don’t do business with me

    we aren’t conventional friends

you showed up out of the blue

makes me know that this internet stuff is not for the twenty and thirty somethings…it is for all of us.

The internet is a wonder and yes there are some seedier sides but you know what? That is true of all life!

Bloggers unite….invite someone you know to blog!

    Fondly,
    Catherine

  • Belle // August 9, 2008 at 7:31 pm

    Hi Cat,

I hope all is well in your world

I’ve been on the sidelines lately but know that you’ve been very busy with your coaching business.

Yes, blogging is fun and is so easy, yet so many shy away from it … don’t really know why.

I have set up a blog for my family/clan and have uploaded tons of pictures to share with everyone, to sort of make the family closer, to be aware of what everyone is doing. However, only a handful is willing and able to participate.

Oh well, I am sure it will have its time when people will realize how wonderful it is.

Glad to see how things are working out with you!!!

    love,
    Belita

  • Catherine Behan // August 9, 2008 at 9:17 pm

    Hi Belita,

Thanks so much for your post. I know that my family is like yours in that they are not quite sure how the whole blog thing works.

Bless their hearts, they are a little skeptical about putting their personal life on line.

I see it more like an interactive greeting card…you sign it and pass it on.

Blogging does tend to keep people in the right mindset too. That is, any family squabbles or tension are handled with more neutrality when they are public.

I like that personally because my family has philosophical viewpoints that are as far as east is from west!

I also love connecting with new people on other blogs. It is amazing how very similar we human beings are…if we could only get that.

Isolation is really a state of mind and if our family of origin is not there for us, we can find true meaningful connection in the most surprising fashion.

    Blogging Rocks!
    Catherine

  • Lorena Hawkins // August 9, 2008 at 10:32 pm

    Hi Catherine,
Yes blogging is for everyone. A place to express your thoughts, keep family or business associates informed of what is going on regularly. It is like having your own radio or talk show. It is fun and easy. I recommend a Video Blogging site (also known as Vlogging)that is web based. It is more personal and safe.
If you like to blog you will love vlogging.

    Much Success!
    Lorena

  • joan // August 10, 2008 at 12:55 am

    Hey, Catherine,

I’m not a baby-boomer, but I read people’s blogs all the time. Just don’t have time to have my own blog ’cause I’m too busy writing for a living [grin.]

Better not tell folks I’m your mom ’cause they might connect me with that weird family of origin you sometimes write about. Weird? Maybe. Dysfunctional? Absolutely (even though the word didn’t exist when we all lived in the same house together.)

Actually, I find it a real challenge to find a family that isn’t or wasn’t dysfunctional. But you know what, Cath? I’m grateful for ALL of my past experiences that led to who I am today. And on Monday I will celebrate my wedding anniversary as I have for the past dozen years or so, even though I’ve now been divorced for 28 years after having been married 28 years. Maybe that makes this year just about to end some special kind of year.

At any rate I do celebrate having married on August 11, 1951 because had I not there wouldn’t be the fabulous and gorgeous creature known as Cat Behan or Catherine Behan or any of her magnificent little brothers (who are definitely not so little any more.)

    Happy blogging!!!

    Hi Lorena,

Vlogging? Holy Moley, Batman, now what?

I have never heard of vlogging, but it does make me curious, I will have to check it out!

    Thanks for the lead!
    Catherine

  • Catherine Behan // August 10, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    Hi Joan,

Thanks for your comments. I always love when you read my ideas!

Do you comment frequently on the blogs you read? Do you have any stories about the connections you have found?

Are you planning to put your articles into a blog format? Do you see blogging as a potential bridge to new readers of your column who might not see it otherwise?

Being that you are on the other end of the boomer generation, I am most interested in your take!

    Cheers,
    Catherine

  • Sandi Bates // August 12, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I started blogging in February of this year at the age of 58! I picked up the book “Blogging for Dummies” and just dove in. Currently I’m using Blogger and thinking of moving over to WordPress. But for a beginner, Blogger is really “newbie” proof. My blog is called “WhatEver is On My Mind” because the name of my one line store is WhatEver Accessories. And, it truly is a blog about whatever is on my mind. I put in links to my jewelry website and I cannot believe how much traffic has increased to my site since I started blogging. It’s just fun to do and you’re right about getting comments. I get giddy, like a school girl when someone leaves a comment.

Nice to find your blog. I’ve asked from time to time where is everybody 50+?

I’ve been blogging for a few years and cannot imagine not doing it. Kudos!
